Manny Machado To The Padres! Analysis and Fantasy Impact

The news finally broke today after a painfully long off season that Manny a Machado has chosen the San Diego Padres to be his new team. Agreeing to a 10 year $300 million deal, Machado has agreed to be the face of this terrible franchise. There is an opt out after the fifth year, but I have a feeling Manny will be out there in San Diego for the duration of this deal.

Let me just say this, I love Machado, and if you have been reading our blogs all of free agency and following our twitter account, you know we love Machado’s game. But is he worth the decade long commitment? I don’t know how anyone can argue he is. He is a rockstar at third base, but is reportedly going to play short stop in San Diego where he is average at best. His career .822 OPS is solid, and has unticked significantly over the past two years. But do I want 10 years of this guy? I don’t want 10 years of any guy!

It’s a good move for the Padres because they have to get back on track. The same franchise that won an NL pennant 20 years ago has been the laughing stock of the NL for two decades. But now, with an incredibly talented farm system and a star in Machado, The Padres have a bright future over the next 5 to 7 years. These long term deals almost never end well for the team that signs the player, up in this scenario it makes sense for the Padres.

Fantasy Impact

Machado’s impact is the same it has been for the past 2 seasons at this point. He will have a bit more protection in this lineup with Will Myers and Eric Hosmer possibly around him, but this lineup is not anything special, even with Machado in it. The Padres will struggle, but Machado’s best years are indeed ahead of him. I still like Machado as a late 2nd Early 3rd rounder. I like him a lot more in dynasty leagues. Don’t forget, the man is only 26.
