Patrick Mahomes is not the best player in the NFL

INHALE AND EXHALE PEOPLE! Take a deep breath and focus on reality with me. I love Patrick Mahomes. He is one of my favorite players to watch in the NFL today. He is a little too pricey from a fantasy football perspective, but he will most likely finish the year in the top three of fantasy quarterbacks. He just got paid a record breaking deal. He’s a Super Bowl champion. He’s now a part owner of the Kansas City Royals! All that cool stuff being said, when twitter exploded last night because the NFL top 100 rankings had Mahomes 4th overall, the recency bias was palpable.

If you watched last year and kept up with the Chiefs like we did you saw Mahomes struggle at times. He was banged up sure, but for a guy who everyone is claiming to be a God and the best player in the NFL; why did he finish 8th in touchdowns, 10th in yardage, and 11th in completion percentage? Mahomes isn’t even the best quarterback in the NFL! He had the best offense around him in the NFL and still didn’t come close to 1st anywhere. Stop acting like it is blasphemy to criticize a guy just because he is off a new contract and a Super Bowl title.

Now, the reason he got paid and probably is a top 5 player overall is the intangible stuff that only Mahomes seems to have. He willed the Chiefs to that Super Bowl win in February and when he is on his A game he is hard to stop. He arguably has the best arm in the NFL and is a clear cut leader in the locker room. But come on guys. We are this outraged that he wasn’t #1 on a list? Come on man. Wake up.
